Grosse Scheidegg

My personal Queen Stage from Meiringen via Grosse Scheidegg to Interlaken.

This demanding tour takes you to one of the scenically most beautiful landscapes in the Bernese Oberland. It’s very attractive to cyclists because it’s almost traffic-free. Only postal buses are allowed to circulate in the upper part. However, they always have priority.

This beautiful tour is the highlight of the summer season 2016.

50.9 km distance, 1508 altitude meters

Shortly after the start in Meiringen the road begins to rise.

View back to the valley to Meiringen.

We pass through impressive rock faces with waterfalls.

Every now and then a postal bus arrives, which announces itself with the Posthorn.

This is a paradise for hikers and cyclists alike.

Eventually we come to the Geisshellhubel, which carries this name for good reason, as you can see from this picture. In the background you keep seeing the Wetterhorn.

This is how I imagined the ideal world to be as a child. Nice that it still exists today!

The 18 km long climb continues. The scenery is great!

About 1 km before you reach the highest point of the pass, you are greeted by encouraging slogans daubed onto the steep ramps. This one literally says “Keep biting a little more!” which is a Bernese way of telling you to keep hanging in on there!

Memorable view back from the pass.

Welcome to Switzerland: even the sparse traffic up here is regulated in three languages! There are many more cyclists than postal buses here.

Downhill you always have the shaded Eiger North Face and Mönch in front of you.

The resort nestled deep down in the valley is Grindelwald.

In Grindelwald and further along the river Lütschine to Interlaken there are many beautiful houses adorned with flowers.
